Weldable receptacles for the HHS series

The HHS TurnLock series includes two types of weldable receptacles: a version with weld nibs for projection welding and a version without weld nibs for welding around the receptacle.

Both versions are available in zinc-plated steel or blank steel with a protective oil coating.

HHS receptacles with weld nibs

Receptacles with weld nibs are intended for projection welding. The small raised projections concentrate the welding current and heat at specific points between the receptacle and the mounting panel.

How projection welding works

  1. Position the receptacle against the prepared panel.
  2. Clamp both components together using the welding machine.
  3. Apply pressure through the welding electrodes.
  4. Pass an electrical current through the weld nibs.
  5. The concentrated heat forms the welds between the receptacle and the panel.

HHS receptacles without weld nibs

The second type has no raised weld nibs. Instead, the receptacle is secured by welding around its outer mounting edge using a conventional process such as MIG or TIG welding.

Perimeter welding normally takes longer than projection welding because the weld must be applied around the receptacle individually. However, it can be more practical when projection-welding equipment is not available or when production quantities are lower.

Follow the technical drawing and use a welding process that is suitable for the receptacle, panel material and panel thickness.

Zinc-plated or oil-coated steel?

The surface finish should also be considered before welding. Weldable HHS receptacles are available in zinc-plated steel and blank steel protected by an oil coating.

Zinc-plated steelWelding affects the zinc coating around the weld area. This can cause visible discoloration and may require cleaning or additional corrosion protection after welding.
Blank, oil-coated steelRemove the protective oil completely from the welding area before welding. After installation, apply a suitable surface treatment to protect the exposed steel against corrosion.

Which weldable receptacle should you choose?

Choose a receptacle with weld nibs when projection-welding equipment is available and a fast, repeatable process is required for larger production quantities.

Choose a receptacle without weld nibs when the component will be welded manually around its edge using MIG or TIG welding. Also consider the required surface finish and any corrosion protection that must be restored after welding.
